Solar-Powered Electric Vehicles (EVs): Lightyear One and Sono Sion
Lightyear, a Dutch firm, has developed a solar-powered EV known as the Lightyear One. This electric vehicle integrates highly efficient solar panels into its hood and roof. The Sion includes solar panels throughout its exterior, producing electricity that can be used to power the vehicle’s battery. The Sion also comes with an innovative bidirectional charging feature, which allows it to distribute excess energy to other devices or to power other electric vehicles. Sono Motors estimates that the Sion’s solar panels can add about 30 kilometers (approximately 18.6 miles) of range per day through solar charging.

These solutions necessitate the updating of solar panels on the rooftops or other vehicle sections to facilitate solar charging. There’s a possibility that these aftermarket options may not deliver as smooth an integration as specifically designed solar-powered EVs. Nonetheless, they do present an opportunity to utilize solar power and diminish dependence on grid electricity.
