Barbie joins the billion-dollar Box Office elite in just 17 days

The Barbie movie has certainly made a splash this summer! Just 17 days after release, it broke the amazing $1 billion barrier, putting it up there with some of the top blockbuster franchises ever.

Margot Robbie stars as Barbie, with Ryan Gosling playing Ken. The film was a huge event when it hit the screens on July 21. Fun fact: it brought Mattel’s famously loved Barbie doll to life! Greta Gerwig directed the film and it raked in $162 million in the US, and a whopping $356 million overseas in its first weekend.

This past weekend, the film’s earnings shot up to $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally. Yep, you read that right—Barbie crossed the $1 billion threshold with ease. Here’s some applause for Gerwig! She boasts the best opening weekend for a movie directed by a woman and also barged her way into the billion-dollar club—a first for a solo female director.

This year, Barbie is only second in line as the most money-making movie around the globe, trailing behind The Super Mario Bros Movie. That film has raked in a whopping $1.3 billion in North America and from other countries since it hit the screens in April – info we’re getting from Box Office Mojo.

Now Jeff Goldstein (top dog at Warner Bros. for handling domestic movie distribution) and Andrew Cripps (who looks after all the international distro for the studio) have come out and done a little bragging. They’ve shared that Barbie has exceeded their wildest hopes, saying it has “blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water.” We’re sold, guys!
