Glacial lake flooding in Indian Himalayas leaves 40 people dead

The glacial South Lhonak lake unleashed a devastating flood in northeastern India’s Sikkim region. It all started on Wednesday when the lake’s waters broke through a hydroelectric dam, causing immediate flash flooding. This calamity directly affected towns and villages along the Teesta River in the beautiful Lachen Valley, nestled amidst the mountains.

Sadly, the consequences have been immense, with approximately 22,000 individuals feeling the impact. Among the affected, nearly 100 people remain missing, including 22 brave soldiers who were on duty.

In Sikkim, officials reported 18 fatalities while 22 bodies were recovered downstream in West Bengal. To assist the affected residents, relief camps have been established and the Indian army is organizing helicopter evacuations for almost 1,500 stranded tourists.

The floodwaters have caused significant destruction, washing away eleven bridges, damaging pipelines, and devastating over 270 houses across four districts. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office assured support to the state authorities during this challenging time.

The South Llonak Lake has witnessed a consistent rise in water levels due to the warming climate, which is causing the glaciers that supply it to melt.
