Imprisoned Iranian rights activist Narges Mohammadi wins 2023 Nobel Peace prize

Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned champion of women’s rights in Iran, has been honored with the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fearless battle against the suppression of women and unwavering pursuit of social change.

Despite being confined, she was granted this esteemed award on Friday for her endeavors “to advance human rights and advocate for freedom,” as stated by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, revealed in Oslo that this courageous woman’s fight for justice has had grave personal consequences. Throughout her ongoing struggle, she has been arrested a staggering 13 times by the oppressive regime. This relentless persecution has led to her conviction on five separate occasions, resulting in a truly unjust punishment of 31 years in prison and a horrifying 154 lashes.

At 51 years old, Mohammadi stands as one of Iran’s most prominent champions for human rights, tirelessly advocating for women’s rights and the elimination of the death penalty. Currently, she finds herself trapped behind the walls of Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, where she is serving multiple sentences totaling around 12 years, as stated by the Front Line Defenders rights organization. Sadly, this is just one among several instances where she has been unjustly detained. The charges brought against her include the absurd accusation of spreading propaganda against the state.

Mohammadi, serving as the vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, an NGO headed by Shirin Ebadi, the distinguished Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2003, expressed her unwavering commitment to democracy and equality. She vowed to persevere, even if it meant enduring imprisonment, as stated in an interview with The New York Times.

Mohammadi firmly declared that she would never back down in her fight against incessant discrimination, tyranny, and gender-based oppression imposed by the oppressive religious regime. She emphasized her resolve to continue working tirelessly until women are liberated.
