The India-Canada visa clash: Terrorism controversy and assassination allegations

India has accused Canada of being a “safe haven for terrorists” after it suspended visas for Canadian citizens. The tension between the two countries stems from Ottawa’s claim that New Delhi may be involved in the assassination of a Sikh separatist activist on Canadian soil. India’s foreign ministry spokesperson warned Canada to consider its international reputation given its allegations against India. In response, India suggested that Canada should be the one worried about being seen as a safe haven for terrorists, extremists, and organized crime.

India has suspended visa applications for Canadian citizens due to perceived security threats against diplomats. The move comes as a response to the incitement of violence, lack of action by Canadian authorities, and creation of a disruptive environment for their high commission and consulates. Consequently, the issuance of visas and visa services have been temporarily halted.

Relations between India and Canada have worsened after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested India may have been involved in the murder of Sikh separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has denied the allegations, stating there is no evidence to support them. The Indian government has also advised television channels to refrain from giving a platform to individuals facing serious charges or belonging to banned organizations.

The Indian government has accused Canada of not taking action against Sikh separatist extremism, which aims to create a separate Sikh homeland called Khalistan in parts of India’s Punjab state. Nijjar, a supporter of Khalistan, is listed as a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He has been accused of trying to radicalize the Sikh community globally in favor of Khalistan’s creation. India sees the demand for Khalistan as a serious national security concern.
