Commemorating the 22nd anniversary of 9/11 through silence, tears, and education

Echoes of courage: Commemorating the 22nd anniversary of 9/11 through silence, tears, and education

On Monday, Americans recalled 9/11 with moments of silence, emotional speeches, and calls for teaching younger generations about the attacks that occurred 22 years ago. Edward Edelman, who lost his brother-in-law Daniel McGinley on 9/11, remarked, as he arrived at New York’s World Trade Center, how the day continually repeats for those who lost loved ones.

President Joe Biden is set to attend a ceremony at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska as a part of his journey back to Washington from India and Vietnam. The visit serves as a reminder of 9/11’s impact across the nation, including remote areas. The terror attack, which killed almost 3,000 people when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field, significantly affected U.S. foreign policy and increased domestic fear. Fire-rescue chief in Virginia’s Goochland County, Eddie Ferguson, recalls the unity in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The rural county with a population of 25,000, situated 100 miles away from Pentagon, has a 9/11 memorial and organizes two anniversary events, one for first responders and another one for all victims. Meanwhile, at ground zero, Vice President Kamala Harris attended a ceremony at the National Sept. 11 Memorial plaza where instead of political speeches, victims read the names of the deceased and shared short personal messages.

Included speeches recognized American values, thanked first responders and military, and applauded the Navy SEALs for killing Osama bin Laden in 2011. Similarly, some called for peace and justice, acknowledged the lives lost in the post-9/11 “War on Terror” and shared reflections on missing loved ones.
