Bali shocking: Online bike taxi (ojol) driver sexually assaulted 26-year-old Brazilian tourist

A shocking incident occurred in Bali when an online bike taxi driver (also known as an “ojol” driver) sexually assaulted a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist. The perpetrator managed to escape but was later captured in Pasuruan, East Java.

The police have identified the suspect as WD, originally from the Bangsalsari District of Jember Regency, East Java. The victim is a woman from Brazil, known as GWL.

According to Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, the Head of Public Relations of the Bali Police, “the victim was a Brazilian tourist on holiday in Bali, staying at a villa in Jimbaran.”

Information from Grab Indonesia helped the police track down the ojol driver. It turns out, he was living in a boarding house in Kerobokan in the North Kuta District of Badung Regency.

The cops headed for the boarding house next, but the driver they were after had vanished. They later discovered that he had bolted to Pasuruan, East Java, from Jimbaran, Badung, attempting to evade law enforcement.

Getting some leads, the law enforcement pinpointed his location within the territory of the East Java Regional Police. Their team took immediate action, successfully capturing him on Tuesday (8/8/2023) around 9.30 PM local time.

Jansen, leading the operation, stated, “Currently, our team has reopened the case and further investigation is underway. This is in relation to the detention of the ojol driver from Bali who assaulted tourists then fled. We finally tracked and arrested him in Pasuruan.”

It’s known that the ojol driver responsible for assaulting tourists in Bali was a driver for Grab Indonesia. Grab Indonesia responded promptly by ending the partnership with the driver and putting him on their blacklist.

Jansen added, “Grab has taken stringent measures based on the conclusive evidence provided from the official investigation by authorities. This includes terminating the driver’s partnership and putting him on the ‘no-hire’ list.”

Bali Governor, Wayan Koster, has voiced his concern over the recent incidents of ‘ojol’ drivers assaulting tourists in Bali. He expressed his anger about these regrettable acts.

Koster, who is nearing the end of his term, called these despicable actions a black mark on Bali’s tourism industry.

At the Trans Resort in Badung, he said, “This is the first time I’ve come to know of a driver assaulting tourists. It’s truly disgraceful.” This was reported by detikBali on Wednesday, 9th July 2023.

Despite these upsetting incidents, Koster remains hopeful that tourists, especially those from overseas, won’t be deterred from enjoying their holidays in Bali due to the actions of a few rogue drivers.

He believes that the incidents involving Brazilian tourists targeted by ‘ojol’ drivers, won’t cause panic among foreign tourists considering a leisurely stay in Bali.
